OBDeleven vs. VCDS: Which diagnostic tool to choose?

Ross-Tech offers diagnostic systems both for professional and enthusiast use – the latter having two options, VCDS HEX-V2 and VCDS HEX-NET, which we’ll cover in this article.  

 

Concept-wise, VCDS resembles the expected diagnostic tools seen in workshops. It’s a PC-based software, which means you’ll need both an interface cable and a separate Windows computer or tablet to run it. 

 

In terms of features, it goes far beyond reading basic diagnostics and fault codes, offering dealer-level capabilities such as module coding, long coding, adaptations, in-depth live data graphs and reliable output tests among many more.  

 

 

 

 

 

OBDeleven 3 supports vehicles equipped with the CAN-bus system – Volkswagen, ŠKODA, SEAT, CUPRA, Audi, and many other models manufactured from 2008 onward. For older cars, this device won’t be suitable. 
  

That said, if you drive cars from different manufacturers, OBDeleven is compatible and also officially licensed by Toyota, BMW and Ford (US) Group vehicles whilst offering basic OBD diagnostic functions for a wide range of other popular brands. If you choose to use VCDS, you’ll get access to all VAG models from 1995 to the most current ones. The coverage in terms of vehicle age is wider, but VCDS is mostly Volkswagen-specific. It does not support advanced diagnostic functions for other brands. For basic OBD2 diagnostics, only vehicles with CARB, KWP-2000 and CAN protocols are supported. 
 

In terms of platform compatibility, OBDeleven 3 is a Bluetooth-based dongle that connects to a smartphone and is controlled with an app.  
 

Meanwhile, VCDS is PC-based – a combination of Ross-Tech’s interface cable (which comes with VCDS software) and a Windows computer. Currently, Ross-Tech offers two interface cables for enthusiast home use: one with Wi-Fi connectivity (HEX-NET) and the classic version that connects through USB (HEX-V2).

In 2020, the Volkswagen Group (VAG) introduced SFD (Vehicle Diagnostic Protection) to block unauthorized changes to control modules. While this boosted security, it also restricted customization for car owners.

As for VCDS, it’s worth the steeper price tag if you have the expertise, a working Windows PC, and a drive and need to use it for advanced tasks consistently. If that’s the case, you should get the most bang for your buck with it.
