OBDeleven vs. VCDS: Which diagnostic tool to choose?
TL;DR: OBDeleven 3 is designed for daily drivers and DIY enthusiasts seeking powerful multi-brand diagnostics, VAG coding, and on-the-go portability, all without the need for a pro setup. VCDS is the more detailed, near dealership-level diagnostic option for VAG – made for more for professional use than personal, and with better legacy support.

If you drive a Volkswagen or Audi and love doing your own maintenance or mods, you’ve probably heard of VCDS and OBDeleven.

These two options flood forum threads and chats for a reason. The Volkswagen community considers them top choices for maximizing the benefits of DIY coding and customizations.

Since both are pretty popular, you may be stuck deciding which is a better option – and a side-by-side comparison is just what you need. Let’s break down features, ease of use, compatibility, cost, and more for each of them to make your purchase decision well-informed.

What is OBDeleven?

The OBDeleven 3 is a compact, Bluetooth-enabled OBD2 scanner that plugs directly into your car’s OBD2 port and pairs seamlessly with a smartphone app.

Primarily a diagnostic tool, it works like a traditional OBD2 scanner – but goes much deeper in the information it provides about your vehicle. Despite being a small dongle – which might seem unusual at first glance – it’s powerful enough to display live data, run output tests, perform coding/long coding and adaptations, and even unlock SFD (newer VW/Audi built-in protection).

How is that possible? It’s because OBDeleven is officially licensed by Volkswagen. It’s exceptionally feature-rich for VAG vehicles, which are available through the OBDeleven (for all main functions) and OBDeleven VAG app (for manual coding).

Beyond diagnostics, OBDeleven 3 also lets you activate hidden features in your car using pre-coded functions called One-Click Apps. For example, you can enable your key fob’s lock/unlock buttons to roll the windows up or down.

While it isn’t a dealership-grade tool, the sheer number of capabilities it offers is impressive – especially for enthusiasts and drivers who want to take more control over their car’s functions.

Pros Cons
Multi-brand supported and officially licensed by Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota, and Ford (US) Groups
SFD unlock, coding and other advanced or dealership-level functions for VAG vehicles
Pocket-sized adapter, conveniently connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth
User-friendly app, good for both beginners and enthusiasts
One-Click Apps for quick & easy customizations
Unlimited cars, regardless of subscription
No support for older vehicles (only CAN-bus compatible, 2008+ plus)
Can be less detailed compared to VCDS
Optional add-ons (PRO, ULTIMATE plans and Credits) are charged extra

What is VCDS?

For years, VCDS (VAG-COM Diagnostic System) has been considered the gold standard in the VAG community, despite it not being an official Volkswagen product.  Well known for its active forum user community, it’s a car diagnostic system developed by Ross-Tech, and independent US company.

Ross-Tech offers diagnostic systems both for professional and enthusiast use – the latter having two options, VCDS HEX-V2 and VCDS HEX-NET, which we’ll cover in this article.

Concept-wise, VCDS resembles the expected diagnostic tools seen in workshops. It’s a PC-based software, which means you’ll need both an interface cable and a separate Windows computer or tablet to run it.

In terms of features, it goes far beyond reading basic diagnostics and fault codes, offering dealer-level capabilities such as module coding, long coding, adaptations, in-depth live data graphs and reliable output tests among many more.

Side note: Many long-time Volkswagen enthusiasts still refer to VCDS as VAG-COM, which was its original name before Ross-Tech rebranded it to VCDS. The old name stuck in the community, so you’ll often hear both used interchangeably.

Pros Cons
Powerful near factory-level diagnostic tool
Excellent support for older VAG vehicles (most vehicles from 1995 onwards)
More detailed, especially when it comes to troubleshooting live data graphs/gauges
PC-based software for those preferring a bigger display
No additional subscriptions
Limited to either 3 or 10 different vehicles (upgrade to 10 costs $169.00)
Requires a Windows computer or tablet to run, more expensive and less convenient on-the-go
Steep learning curve, requires prior knowledge
No-pre-coded customizations, manual only
Does not support advanced functions on other brands, only Volkswagen Group

Vehicle & platform compatibility

OBDeleven 3 supports vehicles equipped with the CAN-bus system – Volkswagen, ŠKODA, SEAT, CUPRA, Audi, and many other models manufactured from 2008 onward. For older cars, this device won’t be suitable.

That said, if you drive cars from different manufacturers, OBDeleven is compatible and also officially licensed by Toyota, BMW and Ford (US) Group vehicles whilst offering basic OBD diagnostic functions for a wide range of other popular brands. You can check if OBDeleven supports your car right here

If you choose to use VCDS, you’ll get access to all VAG models from 1995 to the most current ones. The coverage in terms of vehicle age is wider, but VCDS is mostly Volkswagen-specific. It does not support advanced diagnostic functions for other brands. For basic OBD2 diagnostics, only vehicles with CARB, KWP-2000 and CAN protocols are supported.

In terms of platform compatibility, OBDeleven 3 is a Bluetooth-based dongle that connects to a smartphone and is controlled with an app.

Meanwhile, VCDS is PC-based – a combination of Ross-Tech’s interface cable (which comes with VCDS software) and a Windows computer. Currently, Ross-Tech offers two interface cables for enthusiast home use: one with Wi-Fi connectivity (HEX-NET) and the classic version that connects through USB (HEX-V2).

Note: A more expensive HEX-NET version of VCDS also claims to support smart devices with WiFi and a web browser to perform VCDS-like diagnostics on non-PC devices. However, VCDS-Mobile is still a beta product. Therefore, not all functionalities are available yet.

Features comparison

Diagnostics

With OBDeleven, you get top-of-the-line diagnostics that scan every control unit in minutes. Track, solve, and clear non-critical fault codes with ease. But that’s not all.

In terms of Volkswagen Group vehicle features, the toolkit is complete – live data, battery status, freeze frame data, output tests and more. All inside one easy-to-use app.

Both devices get the job done. But when it comes to user experience, OBDeleven truly stands out. VCDS offers the same powerful features, yet its interface feels entirely different

Here's some software screenshots from VCDS:

And here's how OBDeleven app looks:

SFD unlock

In 2020, the Volkswagen Group (VAG) introduced SFD (Vehicle Diagnostic Protection) to block unauthorized changes to control modules. While this boosted security, it also restricted customization for car owners.

OBDeleven solves this with its SFD unlock. As the first third-party tool officially licensed by Volkswagen Group, OBDeleven securely requests SFD tokens directly from Volkswagen, enabling safe modifications on both new and older VAG vehicles.

VCDS, on the other hand, does not support SFD unlock directly. This is because Ross Tech does not have a way of obtaining the SFD release token, meaning you’ll need to get it elsewhere each time you encounter a locked module.

Coding capabilities

Both OBDeleven and VCDS are great options for advanced coding, including long coding, adaptations, and dealer-level customizations for VAG vehicles. While VCDS is more favoured by experienced mechanics, OBDeleven is a close rival in this category.

Still, a lot depends on the specific tasks you want to do and the models you want to work on.

VCDS may offer greater detail, including the ability to search through the coding bits and access more documentation, as it’s a PC-based software. It’s also a better choice for those looking to code on older vehicles with legacy protocols.

OBDeleven, on the other hand, has instant SFD unlock, which saves time during coding. Another upside is that you won’t need to do manual coding for many functions, as you have the option to use pre-coded customizations called One-Click Apps. With them, you can adjust various comfort features, enable various customization functions, and even unlock manufacturer-hidden car features.

Both tools also have long coding labels available, which help map module coding bytes/bits to plain language.

So, the verdict is:

For those looking to do those looking to do some simple coding, OBDeleven should definitely be enough. For investigation into specific, rarer problems and installing new hardware, VCDS can prove to be more powerful.

Extra features

On top of all the advanced diagnostics and coding, OBDeleven also has a few handy things for daily drivers:

  • Maintenance reminders – a simple way to remember when your oil, filter, or other service is due. You can also add dates like your technical inspection or insurance expiry and relax knowing you’ll get a few reminders before the deadline.
  • Car Buying Assistant, a digital guide for buying your next vehicle. It lets you look up common issues and ask the right questions. Paired with diagnostics, it’s even more powerful and can help you avoid a lemon or negotiate the price down.
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto integration for an even easier live data viewing, battery status, maintenance reminders, with more to come – all on your car’s dashboard.

VCDS, on the other hand, focuses solely on its base functions. Since it’s not app-based and geared more toward professional use, there’s no similar extra features for everyday drivers.

How easy is each tool to use?

Which tool is easier to use really depends on your experience.

OBDeleven is accessible to beginners, with most functions laid out intuitively in the app.

In contrast, VCDS requires a solid understanding of Volkswagen vehicles and often some research – many users rely on tutorials and community forums to learn it. The upside is that VCDS gives you more detailed access, but the trade-off is the learning curve.

Pricing and value for money

OBDeleven 3 starts at a one-time cost of €84.99. For this, your get the newest device and unlimited free diagnostics. Subscriptions and Credits can be added for an additional fee if desired.

In short, OBDeleven offers three main plans:

FREE PRO (€59.99)  ULTIMATE (€189.99)
Included by default with OBDeleven 3. You get unlimited advanced code reading and clearing, live data, history logs, and vehicle information right away. You can also access One-Click Apps, purchased individually with Credits (around €2 per function).  Unlocks manual coding and adaptations for Volkswagen Group vehicles. This includes gateway coding, control unit backup and reset, basic settings, and more. The PRO plan also comes with SFD unlock (not available in FREE) and complimentary priority support.  Includes everything in PRO, plus nearly unlimited Credits. This means you can run as many One-Click Apps as you want without paying extra.*

*Fair use policy applies. More info here

Meanwhile, VCDS has two options at different price points (software included):

  • $199-$299 for VCDS with HEX-V2 (USB connection), price depends on the number of VINs
  • $449 for VCDS & VCDS-Mobile with HEX-NET (Wifi connection)

It’s a one-off payment with no add-on subscriptions. However, keep in mind that you also need a working Windows PC to access all functions. If you don’t have it already, this will set you off an additional $1000.

Live telephone customer support, which includes 15 different tickets (defined as one problem, on one car, to be closed out within a 5-business day period), will cost you an additional $300 per year. Or $20 more for each ticket if you go above the quota.

Price-to quality ratio verdict

If you’re a Volkswagen enthusiast ready to dig into coding and adaptations, the OBDeleven PRO plan (or pack, if you’d like to save by buying a bundle) should satisfy your needs and justify the price.

But, if your primary focus is running diagnostics, checking live data and customizing just a couple simple things, a standalone OBDeleven device should be enough. Chances are that it’ll also pay off well in the long run, since diagnostic scans at shops are notorious for not being cheap.

As for VCDS, it’s worth the steeper price tag if you have the expertise, a working Windows PC, and a drive and need to use it for advanced tasks consistently. If that’s the case, you should get the most bang for your buck with it.

Which one to choose?

Both tools share a lot of functionality, with OBDeleven a bit more universal across brands.

One key difference is pricing – OBDeleven has a subscription-based model, while VCDS is a one-time purchase (but has limited VINs).

If you want to get advanced car diagnostics, coding and unlock hidden features with one click of a button, OBDeleven will be more than enough. It’s simple, portable, and works right from your phone. Many enthusiasts like the fact that you can just leave the dongle in your glovebox and always have a scan tool handy. Ease of use and its near dealer-level diagnostics is where OBDeleven truly shines.

VCDS, however, is the stronger choice for troubleshooting and logging. Its advanced diagnostic features and depth make it a good companion when dealing with tricky faults or detailed data. It’s a tool geared more toward advanced users and professionals, while OBDeleven is better suited for DIYers who want convenience and quick coding.
