TOP 10 most popular OBDeleven maintenance reminders
We looked into which maintenance reminders OBDeleven users set up most often. Here are 10 they find the most useful – and you shouldn’t forget them either.
We’ll explain why each one matters and what to do if you still miss it. It happens to the best of us.
1. Engine oil & filter change reminder
Engine oil lubricates moving parts and helps control engine temperature. Over time, it gets dirty and loses effectiveness.
That’s why oil changes are one of the most important maintenance reminders to set. Miss them for too long, and your engine may run hotter, wear faster, or suffer serious damage.
Most newer vehicles need oil changes every 5,000 to 15,000 miles (roughly 8,000 to 16,000 km), depending on the oil type, driving conditions, and manufacturer recommendations. Always check your owner’s manual for the correct interval.
What should you do if you miss an engine oil and filter change?
If you’re slightly overdue, don’t panic. Check the oil level, then book or plan an oil or filter change as soon as possible.
Avoid driving if the oil is very low, dark, thick, smells burnt, or the oil warning light is on.
Can you keep driving if your engine oil is overdue for replacement?
You can keep driving for a short time if the oil is only slightly overdue, the level is normal, and there are no warning signs. But proceed with caution.
Avoid driving if the oil warning light turns on, the engine gets louder, you smell burning oil, or the oil level is very low.
Can you keep driving if your oil filter is overdue for replacement?
It’s usually okay to drive briefly if you’re just past the replacement interval. However, don’t delay it for long – an old filter can become clogged and reduce how well the oil protects your engine.
Stop driving if the oil level is very low, the oil warning light turns on, you hear unusual engine noise, or you notice a burning smell.
2. Engine air filter replacement reminder
Your engine needs clean air to run properly, and a dirty engine air filter can restrict airflow. To avoid making the engine work harder than it should, make sure to replace the engine filter in time.
This is usually a very simple and affordable service task – but it’s easy to forget. That’s why it’s one of the most popular maintenance reminders to set up.
What should you do if you miss an engine air filter replacement?
Check the engine air filter immediately and replace it if it looks dirty, clogged, or damaged.
You should also replace it soon if you notice weak acceleration, higher fuel consumption, rough engine performance, or reduced power.
Take a look at you owner’s manual for the recommended replacement interval for your vehicle.
Can you keep driving with an old engine air filter?
Usually, yes.
But replace the filter soon if your car feels sluggish, fuel use increases, or the engine runs rough. Avoid long drives if the filter is heavily clogged or damaged.
3. Timing belt or timing chain replacement reminder
The timing belt or timing chain keeps key engine parts moving in sync. If it fails, the damage can be serious – and expensive.
Timing belts usually have scheduled replacement intervals. Timing chains often last longer, but they can still wear or stretch over time.
This is one of those maintenance tasks you don’t want to guess on. A reminder helps you track it before it becomes a major engine problem.
What should you do if you miss a timing belt or timing chain replacement?
Book an inspection or replacement if you’re overdue immediately, especially if you notice rattling or ticking noises, hard starts, misfires, or poor engine performance.
Check your owner’s manual or service schedule and compare the recommended interval with your car’s mileage and age.
Can you keep driving with an old timing belt or timing chain?
No. Don't let it get too far past the recommended interval.
Stop driving if you hear rattling or ticking, the engine misfires, or performance suddenly changes. A failed timing belt or chain can cause severe engine damage.
4. Cabin air filter replacement reminder
The cabin air filter cleans the air coming through your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. When it gets clogged, airflow can become weaker, odors can build up, and windows may fog up more often.
This reminder helps keep the cabin fresher and more comfortable – especially if you drive in traffic, dusty areas, or during allergy season.
What should you do if you miss a cabin air filter replacement?
Replace the cabin air filter if you notice weak airflow, bad smells, dust inside the cabin or windows fogging up more than usual. This procedure is usually done as part of regular oil changes.
While air filter replacement isn’t an urgent task, it can make every drive less comfortable.
Can you keep driving with an old cabin air filter?
Yes. A missed cabin air filter replacement shouldn’t stop the car from driving.
But replace it soon if airflow is weak or foggy windows affect visibility.
5. Transmission fluid change reminder
Transmission fluid helps keep your gearbox lubricated and shifting smoothly.
Like other fluids, it can break down over time. When that happens, shifting can become rough.
That’s why transmission fluid reminder helps you avoid missing a service task that can affect drivability and long-term transmission health.
What should you do if you miss a transmission fluid change?
If you miss a transmission fluid change, don’t ignore it. Check the fluid level and condition first, then schedule a service as soon as possible. Check your vehicle’s recommended service interval.
Look out for rough shifting, slipping gears, unusual noises, and transmission overheating. If you notice any of these signs, get the transmission checked before replacing the fluid. Some transmissions need a specific service procedure.
Can you keep driving with old transmission fluid?
Yes. You may be able to drive briefly if the fluid is only slightly overdue and the car still shifts normally. But don’t put it off for long, as old transmission fluid can reduce protection and lead to expensive repairs.
In some cases, changing very old transmission fluid can even reveal existing wear or make shifting issues more noticeable. If the transmission worked better before the fluid change, the gearbox may already be worn and may need repair or replacement.
Stop driving if the gears slip, shifting feels rough or delayed, the transmission overheats, or you hear unusual noises.
6. Vehicle inspection reminder
A vehicle inspection is a legally required check that confirms your car meets road safety and environmental standards.
Requirements vary by country or region, but the inspection usually checks key safety-related parts, such as tires, brakes, lights, suspension, steering, emissions, visible damage or defects.
Missing a required inspection can lead to fines, failed registration renewal, or restrictions on using your vehicle on public roads. That’s why this reminder is useful – it keeps your car road-legal.
What should you do if you miss a vehicle inspection?
Book the required inspection as soon as possible.
Before going, check the basics:
- Lights are working
- Tires have enough tread
- There are no obvious leaks
- Warning lights are not on
- Brakes and steering feel normal
- Required documents are ready
If your inspection has expired, check your local rules before driving. In some places, you may only be allowed to drive the car directly to the inspection center or repair shop.
Can you keep driving without a required vehicle inspection?
It depends on your local laws and the car’s condition. If the inspection is still valid and the car feels normal, yes.
If the inspection has expired, avoid driving until you confirm what’s allowed in your area. Do not drive if there are safety issues, such as brake problems, steering issues, tire damage, leaks, overheating, or safety-related warning lights.
7. Fuel filter replacement reminder
The fuel filter helps prevent dirt and debris from reaching the engine.
When it becomes clogged, fuel flow can be restricted. That may lead to rough running, hard starts, reduced performance, or stalling.
Fuel filters are easy to forget – until the car starts struggling. A reminder helps you replace it before it affects how your vehicle drives.
What should you do if you miss a fuel filter replacement?
Check whether your vehicle has a replaceable fuel filter and what the service interval is.
Have the fuel system checked if you notice hard starts, hesitation, rough idling, loss of power or stalling.
Can you keep driving with an old fuel filter?
Usually, yes, if the car starts and drives normally.
But avoid long trips if you notice stalling, hesitation, or loss of power. A clogged fuel filter can leave you stranded.
8. Spark plug replacement reminder
Spark plugs ignite the fuel-air mixture inside the engine.
Over time, they wear out. When they do, you may notice rough idling, misfires, poor acceleration, or higher fuel consumption.
Setting a spark plug reminder helps you replace them before performance drops or other engine components come under extra strain.
What should you do if you miss a spark plug replacement?
Replace worn spark plugs if you’re overdue or notice misfires, hard starts, rough idle, poor acceleration, higher fuel use or the check engine light on.
Check your owner’s manual for the recommended spark plug replacement interval and do not ignore symptoms for too long. Worn spark plugs can put extra strain on ignition coils and other engine parts.
Can you keep driving with old spark plugs?
Yes, but only if the engine runs smoothly and you’re only slightly overdue.
Stop driving if the engine misfires, shakes, loses power, or the check engine light flashes. A flashing check engine light can indicate a more serious problem.
9. Brake system inspection reminder
Your brakes are too important to ignore, so setting a reminder to inspect them is especially useful. Regular check-ups are even more important if you often drive in traffic, tow loads, drive downhill, or brake hard.
A brake system inspection helps check the brake pads, discs, calipers, brake lines, and related components before braking performance drops.
What should you do if you miss a brake system inspection?
Inspect the brake system as soon as possible if you hear squeaking, grinding, or scraping. The brake warning light on the dashboard is another clear sign that something may be wrong.
Also get it checked if the brake pedal feels soft, the car pulls to one side while braking, stopping distance increases.
Can you keep driving after missing a brake system inspection?
Only if the brakes feel normal and there are no warning signs.
Do not keep driving if you hear grinding, the pedal feels soft, stopping distance increases, the car pulls while braking, or the brake warning light is on.
10. Brake fluid change reminder
Brake fluid helps transfer pressure from the brake pedal to the braking system.
Over time, it can absorb moisture. Then, raking performance and long-term system health can worsen. A reminder and timely service can stop that from happening.
What should you do if you miss a brake fluid change?
Check when the brake fluid was last changed and book a brake fluid test or replacement as soon as possible.
Also, have the brake system checked immediately if you notice soft or spongy brake pedal, weaker braking, brake warning light or a visible fluid leak.
Can you keep driving if your brake fluid change is overdue?
Yes, but only if the braking feels normal and you’re only slightly overdue.
Do not keep driving if the pedal feels soft, braking feels weak, fluid is leaking, or the brake warning light is on. Brake fluid issues can affect stopping power.
