What is SFD2 unlock?
TL;DR: SFD2 is a new security layer in the latest (2024+) Volkswagen Group vehicles that blocks coding and adaptations. OBDeleven is actively working to implement an SFD2 unlock solution for its users.
If you follow car coding communities – or even our social media – you’ve probably noticed the same question everywhere:
“When SFD2?”
The reason for all the buzz is simple. Newer Volkswagen Group vehicles introduced a much stricter security system that blocks many modification features. Known as SFD2, this change quickly sparked frustration and a growing demand to bring those features back.
Compared to the original SFD, SFD2 is significantly more limiting. While it comes with stronger security, many users voiced how it’s not ideal – independent workshops had to deal with new limitations, while enthusiasts had dramatically fewer personalization options.
We’ve been hearing this feedback loud and clear. And yes, we can’t wait for a solution too – our team is actively working to make that happen as we speak. If you’d like to be the first to get updates on SFD2 unlock progress, make sure to leave your email in the subscription box down below.
What is SFD2?
For those not yet familiar, SFD2 is the second-generation vehicle diagnostic protection system used in the latest new or renewed Volkswagen Group vehicles (mainly made from 2024 onwards).
SFD2 was introduced to enhance safety by meeting stricter EU cybersecurity and vehicle regulation requirements. It ensures that only authorized users and tools can modify vehicle systems.
As a result, access is restricted to sensitive diagnostic functions such as:
- Coding and long coding
- Adaptations
- Parametrization
In practice, this means that modifications for, let’s say, the 2023 Volkswagen Golf may not work on the same model produced in 2024.
How would SFD2 unlock work?
While implementation details are still being explored, SFD2 authorization is expected to work similarly to current OBDeleven’s SFD unlock*, acting as an authorization layer for vehicle modules protected by Volkswagen Group’s enhanced security.
Access would likely be granted through Volkswagen Group systems, verifying both the user and the diagnostic tool in use automatically.
Once authorized, the system could then potentially allow permitted actions such as coding, adaptations, parametrizations, and the use of features that were previously restricted, including certain One-Click Apps.
So, when will SFD2 unlock be available?
We know how highly anticipated this feature is for both drivers and workshops, which is why it’s one of our top priorities. We’re actively working on ways to collaborate with Volkswagen Group to deliver a reliable, well-built solution. Any future availability of SFD2 will depend on Volkswagen Group authorization and technical feasibility.
While we can’t share a timeline just yet, we’re hopeful to have good news soon. If you want to be informed as soon as updates are available, don’t forget to drop your email right here:

FAQ
Do I need SFD2 unlock for diagnostics?
No. You can still perform basic and advanced OBD diagnostics, fault reading and live data viewing without SFD2 unlock. Coding and adaptations are the functions that require authorization.
Is SFD unlock safe?
Yes. SFD unlock is an authorized process within the OBDeleven ecosystem, using official Volkswagen Group servers to request a valid SFD token.
All actions are secure, traceable, and compliant with manufacturer requirements.
Is SFD2 an official Volkswagen term?
Not officially. VW Group uses “SFD”, while the community uses “SFD2” to refer to the newer generation of SFD protection.
