What Is the OBD2 System? 


OBD2 diagnostics (On-Board Diagnostics Second Generation) is the latest standard that communicates with vehicle control units. Since its introduction, different diagnostics equipment has been utilized to check vehicle performance.
 
The early OBD systems would return information in the all-too-familiar malfunction indicators on a dashboard – but no additional information about the actual cause of a fault.
     
Nowadays, the OBD system has been developed to use digital communication to communicate with a vehicle. The transmitted data can now show real-time data and various standardized Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).  


How Does It Work? 


OBD2 system uses digital communication to access control units via the vehicle diagnostic port, better known as the OBD2 port, which can usually be found under the dashboard, right under the steering wheel.
 
Once a diagnostic tool is connected with a vehicle, it then uses the OBD2 system to scan different car components. The transmitted data then shows different standardized DTCs, which make it easier to identify specific problems.

A Bit of Backstory 
 

In the early 1980s, manufacturers began implementing electronic monitoring systems to regulate engine operations, fuel delivery, ignition, and emission systems, as well as to diagnose issues and notify users.
 
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) took the initiative to develop a universal diagnostic standard, leading to the introduction of the first-generation On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-I or OBD1) system. 
 
However, the OBD1 simply wasn’t sustainable due to the lack of consistency across vehicle manufacturers and limited diagnostic capabilities. That’s when it prompted the development of a more comprehensive and standardized system – OBD2.

In 1996, OBD2 became mandatory for all new vehicles sold in the United States, and it has since become a global standard adopted by many countries worldwide.
 
Later, OBD2 diagnostics introduced a common language, the CAN-bus protocol, between vehicles and diagnostic tools, ensuring compatibility and accessibility across different car models.
